At Ölz der Meisterbäcker, we have been addressing the issue of palm oil for several years as part of our internal sustainability working group. The lion’s share of fats used at Ölz – over 80% – are liquid, vegetable oils (including canola and sunflower seed) as well as butter.
We only use palm oil if it cannot be replaced in production for technical reasons. Palm oil is a naturally hardening fat and free from harmful trans fatty acids. The palm fats we use are gently refined and therefore have a very low 3 MCPD fatty acid ester content. There are currently no maximum legal limits in place. The EU is currently working on a recommendation, which we strongly endorse.
As categorised by the WWF as well, palm oil is not fundamentally a ‘bad’ oil. With palm oil, comparatively little land is needed to meet a large part of the global demand for vegetable oils. However, palm oil cultivation must be done in a way that is ecologically, economically and socially acceptable. One of the important minimum standards for the cultivation of palm oil is defined by the Round Table for Palm Oil RSPO.
The Round Table for Palm Oil (RSPO) has a simple goal: establishing a sustainable palm oil industry.
RSPO is transforming the sector by bringing together stakeholders from throughout the supply chain to develop and implement global standards for the production and sourcing of certified sustainable palm oil.
We protect resources and embrace sustainability out of love for the environment. Our quality standards go hand in hand with innovative, green technologies. Our mission: impeccable product quality in harmony with nature.
